Join Pat Hutchins' characters as they enjoy eating apples off of the Farmer's apple tree! Can you predict which animal will be next, and help count the apples as they are eaten? So many great preschool activities and learning games for kids that we felt compelled to share our enjoyment of Ten Red Apples!

Learn more about Pat Hutchins and her fabulous literary works. (Not just for children!) Ms. Hutchins' artwork is easily recognizable, and plays an integral part in her storytelling. We love all the opportunities Ms. Hutchins provides us as educators as we work to present preschool activities and learning games for kids!
Introducing the story within group is a fabulous way to explore each new literary adventure, and develop learning games for kids. With some students, Sana likes to introduce the story within a small, therapeutic setting so that she can move at a pace more effective with specific preschool and kindergarten students. Loren presents the book to be read to families the week before he introduces it in class, allowing families an opportunity to explore the book at home before the larger group at school. Each day, we provide group re-tells of the story before preschool activities are presented, and refer to the story within play, or at mealtimes. More formal story re-tells can Include felt storyboard pieces, using manipulatives to represent aspects of the story, or even looking at photos or watching a video that we create as a class.

Preschool activities that have us moving around, and searching for letters is fun! Families can send in photos of letter A they found in the community, & kids can look around the school for A's. Bring paper towel roll telescopes - they work great! Collect data through photos or tally marks.

A quick, simple take-home activity for children: 1 paper towel roll, 5 popsicle sticks, 5 apple images, marker. Activity can be completed in large group or individually. (We like to sing the "5 Little Apples" song as we play this and other apple preschool activities.)

Sorting is a great pre-math skill that builds attention, perception, and basic rote skill knowledge. (We tie in fine motor skills with our learning games for kids by having them use tools such as tongs. In the photo above its done through the game, "Sorting Pie."

We've developed some apple-based pre-math learning games for kids, and preschool activities that require little work or prep time!
[See the printable below.]

Whether by taste, color, size, or amount, children can help graph apples on paper or on a pocket chart. Great pre-math skill development! [Use pattern printable below for images to use.]

We love exploring food with children, and in this case, Apples! Try predicting how many seeds are in an apple, which peel is the longest, which color apple turns brown first, etc. Preschool activities and apples go hand in hand!

Working on speech and language skills within play to accomplish goals at a child's level is simply "education through play." We encourage using a collection of manipulatives that represent aspects from the story as a tool for learning. We call these types of preschool activities, "story baskets."
Predictable, rhythmic stories (such as Ten Red Apples), provide perfect opportunities for story retell, and learning games for kids. Using red pom poms and animal & people toys, children can help retell the story as they work on specific speech & language goals.

Similar to Simon Says, children take turns pretending to be the farmer. They direct peers to place a pretend apple (pom pom, ball, actual apple!) on different body parts, and peers follow. Learning games for kids that include leadership provide super self-esteem growth.

Preschool activities such as Simon Says can be adapted for your students. Here, the Farmer's wife (a child carrying a basket with some apples) directs one peer to place an apple somewhere in the room. Add the challenge of placing two apples in two different locations!

There are many ways to use apples as a reinforcer in your speech session. We love when children earn reinforcers as they work with preschool activities. Earning apple slices to build a complete apple, apple stamps on a tree, apple branches, pom poms to add to a tree, etc. [See printables below.]

Working as a team, the children try to pick the fruits from the trees before the raven reaches the end of the path. Learning games for kids such as this can be built, or

Apples provide opportunities for patterning in many ways: color, size, and even bites missing! Creating learning games for kids can be fun as we sneak in math skills! [See FREE printables below]

A cross between BINGO and Lotto, these preschool activities allow kids to develop listening, attending, and academic skills. [Printables below]

Other preschool activities include laying various fruits down on the carpet in a row Cover them up, have kids close their eyes, & remove one. "Open your eyes!" Remove the blanket. "I wonder which fruit is missing?" (Banana, Orange, Apple, Pear, & Kiwi are fun to start with!)

Using apples of different colors, have children sort the apples, count the apples, and if your class is up fr the challenging, explore what happens when an apple is cut in two. Is it now two apples? Great preschool activities present fraction opportunities!

Using a closed bag filled with different fruits, have children try to isolate which fruit you describe. (Banana, Orange, Apple, Pear, & Kiwi are fun to start with!) We have found that learning games for kids can be presented within large groups, and adds to the excitement!

We love repurposing materials to make learning games for kids! Here, we use a large sheet of cardboard (or stacked boxes) to form o draw a tree. Cut a hole as a goal, kids can kick an apple (a red ball) through the goal, or knock down the boxes.

We love rolling & pounding playdoh to form apples, and placing them on a tree template! Count the apples, feed them to different animals, combine 2 apples to make 1 BIG apple! Learning games for kids is always fun with playdoh. [Reinforcer template below]

We love using different colored, sized, and textured balls to represent apples. Incorporate all these fun"apples" into your rolling and ball activities! [Print out the free PT preschool activities sheet below.]

A fun way to work on sensory skills, perceptual skills, AND have fun!
[See preschool activities printables below]

Activities for toddlers that are messy are always a hit! We like having kids explore real food. Peeled apples provide just amount texture for many preschool activities. [See printables below]

Using apples sliced in half, have children make apple prints with red, yellow, and green paints! Activities for toddlers must include food!

Using 10 pieces of 5"x7" card stock, glue one tree template onto each piece of the card stock. Each tree is numbered 0-10. Have children add one apple fingerprint for each number represented on that tree. Bind pages together with a simple cover, and kids now have a their own counting book!

Painting TALL trees on bulletin board paper provides physical movement with art. Children can stretch tall with brown paint, and puuuuull down their strokes, Reach out for branches, and up again to add apples. Activities for toddlers and preschoolers.

Using paper plates, preschool and kindergarten children can create their own apples! Use tissue paper, paint, sponges - whatever is good and messy makes for great preschool activities !

Acting out the story is a super way to keep kiddos engaged in preschool activities, and solidify the preschool and kindergarten skills being presented. Try learning games for kids outdoors with costumes, and real apples!

We have so much finding and creating songs to pair with the stories we're featuring! Apples are a fabulous subject for preschool activities, and we think our choices will keep you and your students smiling! [Free songs PDF below]

What better way for children to connect themselves to literature than to have them help prepare food that relates to the story? Fun preschool activities make natural learning games for kids!

October is the perfect month to go apple picking! We encourage families to send their child to school with apples from a recent shopping trip, or even a apple farm visit. (Class field trips are a valuable source of yummy apples, too.) We enjoy graphing and having children help taste apples. "Which color apples do you enjoy the most?" "How many seeds did you find in your apple [compared to a friend's apple]?" "Do apples taste better sliced, or whole?" "What is your favorite apple dish? Apple pie, apple cake, applesauce, friend apples, candy apples, plain apples, apple juice?" Preschool activities with apples taste better with grown-ups, too!
